I think by default you have steel walls.
Mountains provide overhead mountain roofs that are impregnable to mortar fire so dig in deep enough and you won t have half your base turned to scrap metal by mortar fire during the next siege.

A roof collapses if there s no support rock wall within 6 squares of the tile.
They would not see each others roofs.
Even when i went to the expand build roof button and cover the whole room.
Everybody is dying of heatstroke inside.
You can run out of steel very quickly making a large structure.
Structures leave ash on the ground when burnt.
Colonists can build structures of a various materials each with different beauty flammability and hit points.
They just refuse to build it.
